Winston Churchill once said, “We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.” While this quote was part of a statement following the WWII destruction of Britain’s House of Commons, many have shifted the words over the years to read, “We shape our homes and then our homes shape us.” Not exactly a historically accurate quote, but no less true today.
For many, home is a refuge. Your sacred personal space to relax, recharge…perhaps build a family, or spend time with friends and loved ones. It stands to reason that creating a healthy home environment could lead to a healthier and happier life.
In the world’s original blue zones—places where residents tend to live longer lives free from most chronic disease—the home is set up to foster natural movement, time for meaningful connection, and space to unwind. You can make small changes to your home that may have big impact on your health and longevity.
You could, for example, swap some of your electric tools and gadgets for their “analog” versions. Midwinter? Try shoveling part of your walk instead of automatically starting up the snowblower. Or ditch the leaf blower in the autumn for a rake instead.
Catching up with a friend on the phone? Instead of sitting down while you chat, walk around your home to get some extra steps in. When it’s time for silence, create a relaxing space or corner to downshift through meditation, quiet reflection, or prayer.
Racking up too much screen time? Take stock of how many televisions you have in your home. According to Nielson, the average American family has 2.5 televisions per household, with 31% of households having more than four TVs.1 Donate or sell some of those extra devices and consider keeping just one or two in your home’s common areas. (Healthy bonus: removing televisions from bedrooms leads to better sleep.)
